To all to whom these presents shall come, know ye that I Dekar Clemetson of the County of Culpeper in the Commonwealth of Virginia being possessed of a mulatto boy named Walter which said boy I have bound an apprentice to James Shapes, Carpenter &c, until he arrives to the age of twenty one years, his said apprenticeship to commence on the twenty first day of April one thousand seven hundred and ninety five and being desirous to emancipate and set free the said mulatto boy Walter saving the claim which the above named James Sharpe has to his servitude for the time aforesaid do by these presents and by virtue of an act entitled an act to authorize the manumission of slaves passed in the year of our Lord 1782, willingly clearly and fully emancipate and set free the said mulatto boy Walter forever, and do hereby declare that the said mulatto boy Walter to be clearly and freely discharged from his former state of slavery and servitude, saving his time of apprenticeship as aforesaid and that he may acquire property possess and enjoy it in as full and ample manner as the free born citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand and affix my seal the 11th day of January in the year of our Lord 1794.

At a court held for Culpeper County the 20th day of January 1793. This writing from Dekar Clemetson to negro Walter was proved by the oaths of John Shackelford Jr, Benj’n Shackelford, witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
