Know all men by these presents that John S. Martin of the County of Scott and State of Virginia, do hereby from and after the 1st day of October in the year 1829, Manumit, emancipate, and set free a Negro Woman slave named Clara & her infant child Mariah , the said Clara having been sold and delivered to me by George Minsen of Sulivan County Tennessee some years ago, and I hereby declare her the said Clara and her infant Child Maraih to be from and after the said 1st day of October 1829 entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the right and privileges of free person with which it is in my power to vest them. She the said Clara hereby emancipated as aforesaid is a woman of dark complection[sic] about feet inches high , and about thirty years old. In testimony where of I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 13th day of October in the year 1828.

At a court continued and held for Scott County at the Court House thereof the 15th day of October 1828.
This writing executed by John S. Martin emancipating his Negro slave Clara, and her infant child Maraih from and after the 1st day of October 1829, was acknowledged in court by the said Martin to be his act and deed, and ordered to be recorded.
