Know all men by these presents that I David W. Barton of Winchester Va. have emancipated and set free my negro man named John sold to me by the widow & heirs of Thomas Rust dec’d & I hereby discharge said John from all claims which I have to his services & hereby declare & ordain that he shall be henceforth a free man.
Witness my hand & seal this 31st of December 1841.

At a court held for the Corporation of Winchester the 8th day of January 1842.
This deed of emancipation was acknowledged by David W. Barton and ordered to be recorded. And it is ordered to be certified that the said negro is of sound mind and body, and under the age of forty five years.
