Know all men by these presents that I Nancy McCredie, a free woman of color residing in the Town of Manchester in consideration of the love and affection I have for my husband, a slave named Pleasants who was purchased by me of D.B. Hancock guardian of Andrew Johnson (the said guardian acting in that behalf under the decree of the County Court of Chesterfield) as appears by the bill of sale of the said guardian to me dated the 16th day of January 1854, do hereby emancipate, manumit, and set free my husband, the said Pleasants, so that hereafter in this state or elsewhere he may be, he shall have and enjoy all the rights and privileges pertaining to free persons of color.

County of Chesterfield to wit:
I Christoper C. McRae a notary public in and for the County of Chesterfield and State of Virginia aforesaid certify Nancy McCredie a free woman of color whose name is signed to the foregoing deed bearing date the 9th day of September 1854 personally appeared before me in my said county and being examined by me privily and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her, she the said Nancy McCredie acknowledged the same to be her act and declared that she had willingly executed it and does not wish to retract it.

In Chesterfield County Court Clerkâs Office September the 11th 1854
The foregoing deed with the certificate of acknowledgement and privy examination therein endorsed was filed in the office and admitted to record.
