This indenture made and entered into on this third day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven. Witnesseth that I Joshua Alvis of the County of Chesterfield in the State of Virginia, from motives of benevolence and for & in consideration of the sum of one dollar in hand paid to me at and before the signing & sealing of this indenture, hath manumitted set free & discharged from slavery & by these presents do manumit, set free and discharge from slavery my negro woman named Frances, aged about twenty six years and her two children, the one named Mary Ann, and the other an unnamed infant. And I hereby relinquish discharge and forever abandon all claim to her & their labor and services & hires, and any claim to any or all property, rights or credits, real or personal which they or either of them may hereafter acquire or obtain and to any and all increase of the said Francis.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day and year first above written.

In Chesterfield County Court: April the 12th 1847
The foregoing deed of manumission from Joshua Alvis to his slave Frances & her two children was presented in court, acknowledged by Joshua Alvis party thereto to be his act and deed & ordered to be recorded.
