Text of Freedom Document
I Henry Howard of the County of Chesterfield, do constitute, make and ordain this my last will and testament, to wit,
My debts are to be paid with due dispatch. I give to the children of my brother William Howard my three slaves Davis, Tillis and Linda and their increase, to them and their heirs forever.
My will and desire is that after my death, that all the balance of my negroes (except those above given away), to wit, Sally and her children and her grandchildren namely Amy, Rebecca, Fanny, Mary, Isham, Allen, Ala, Delia, Deltha, Edward, William, James, Francis, Anderson, Elijah, Polly, Emaline, Louisa and Jordan be emancipated and set free, with all their increase from this date.
My will and desire is that all the balance of my property both real & personal not heretofore given away, emancipated or set free be sold by my executor hereafter appointed; and my will is that my executor give my negro woman Sally whom I have above emancipated, five hundred dollars, and the balance of the money arising from such sale, with any money that I may leave at my death, to constitute a fund for the purpose of removing my said emancipated slaves to some free state, and the balance after such removal to be laid out in the purchase of land in such state for the benefit of all such negroes as I have emancipated in this will simply to them and their heirs forever. I appoint my friend Higgison Hancock executor to this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of march 1839.
