Know all men by these presents that I Major Brooks of the County of Chesterfield in the State of Virginia have emancipated and set free and doth, by these presents emancipate, manumit and set free from slavery and servitude my negro woman named Louisa and her two children to wit Susan and John from this time henceforth to possess and enjoy all the rights and privileges which they would have possessed and enjoyed if they had been born free. And I hereby warrant the right of freedom to said Louisa and her two children free from the claim or demand of all and every person or persons whatsoever claiming by me or under me in any form whatsoever. As witness my hand and seal this 11th day of September 1837.

Chesterfield County, to wit,
We Higgison Hancock and Thomas Gregory Jr. Justices of the Peace in the county aforesaid and State of Virginia, do hereby certify that Major Brooks a party to a certain deed bearing date the 11th day of September 1837 hereto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid & acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of Chesterfield in that said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 11th day of September 1837.

In Chesterfield County Court September 11th 1837. The foregoing deed of emancipation, with the certificate of acknowledgement thereon endorsed, made before two Justices of the Peace was presented in court and ordered to be recorded.
