This indenture made and entered into this 19th day of March 1833 between Thomas O Taylor late of Powhatan County, at present residing in Chesterfield County, and Albert M. Elam, as trustees for Caroline M.R. Johnson, residents of the said county of Chesterfield, the said Thomas O. Taylor as well in his own right, and as trustees for said Caroline M.R. Johnson for herself in approbation and confirmation of the acts of her said trustees. Whereas Peyton, commonly called Peyton Harris a mulatto man aged about 39 years, the property of said Tho. O. Taylor, has for wife Ally a mulatto woman aged about 34 years, the property of the said Caroline M.R. Johnson in trust in the said A.M. Elam, have five children to wit: Caroline, aged about 16 years, the property of Tho. O. Taylor in trust for the said Caroline M.R. Johnson and Peyton aged about 17 years, and Ann aged about 1 ½ years, are held in trust by the said A.M. Elam for the benefit of the said Caroline M.R. Johnson, and Thomas aged about 13 years (and now in the city of New York where he has resided for about 12 months) and Adalaide aged about 11 years, are the property of the said Tho. O. Taylor in his own right. And whereas the said Thomas O. Taylor, Carolina M.R. Thompson and A.M. Elam being desirous of testifying their approbation for the faithful duty and servitude of the said Peyton and Ally his wife, and their said children Caroline, Thomas, Adalaide, Peyton, and Ann as well as for and in consideration of other valuable considerations and inducements them on the premises moving, have given, granted, manumitted and set free the said Peyton and Ally his wife and their said children, Caroline, Thomas, Adalaide, Peyton and Ann, and doth by these presents give, grant, manumit, emancipate, and set free the aforesaid slaves, and all the issue hereafter of the female part of said family, forever, and no longer in any form or manner to be held in slavery or servitude whatsoever, but to hold, have and enjoy all the freedom, liberty, rights and immunities that would have appertained to them as if the said Peyton and wife Ally and their said children had been born free. In testimony whereof, the said Thomas O. Taylor for himself, and as trustee for the said C.M.R. Johnson and the said A.M. Elam as trustee for the same said C.M.R. Johnson for herself in confirmation and approval of the said acts of her said trustees have the day and year first aforesaid set their hands and affixed their seals.

Chesterfield County to wit: W.A. Patteson and W.M. Weisiger magistrates for the county aforesaid, do hereby certify that Caroline M.R. Johnson, a party to a certain bearing date on the 19th of March 1833 and hereto annexed, personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be her act and deed, and desired us to certify the said acknowledgement to the clerk of the county of Chesterfield, in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands this 26th March 1833.

Chesterfield County Court Clerk’s Office This deed of emancipation from Thomas O. Taylor and Albert M. Elam and Caroline M.R. Johnson to Peyton Harris and his wife Ally and their five children was proved in the clerk’s office of the said county court of Chesterfield, on the 26th day of March in the year 1833, as to the said Taylor and Elam by the oath of Richard W. Flourney and Grandison B. Woolridge subscribing witnesses thereto, and with the certificate of the acknowledgment of the said Caroline M.R. Johnson, taken in due form of law before William A. Patteson and William W Weisiger esquires, Justices of the Peace, duly commissioned and qualified a such, and admitted to record here and ordered to be certified to all whom it may concern. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and have caused the official seal of said county court to be hereto affixed the said twenty sixth day of March Anno Dom one thousand eight hundred and thirty three, and in the 57th year of our Independence.
