Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I Benjamin Branch of the county of Dinwiddie acting executor of John Barker deceased a copy of whose testament and last will is hereunto annexed do hereby acknowledge that I have received from Becky (Cuffie’s wife) the negro woman slave in my said testator will mentioned, and from her husband (a free man of color) the said Cuffie compensation for sixty two pounds, ten shillings, given (as appears by the will aforesaid) for the said Becky by her late master the said John Barker deceased. In consideration whereof, and in obedience to, and in execution of the will of my said Testator, I the said Branch executor as aforesaid, have emancipated, manumitted and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free the said Becky, wife of the said Cuffie hereby pronouncing and declaring the said Becky to be no longer a slave, but to be to all intents and purposes as free as if she had been freeborn, and had never been in slavery or bondage.
In testimony whereof I the said Benjamin Branch executor as aforesaid of the said John Barker deceased have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 8th day of July 1805.

Memo. The compensation within alluded to was principally made to the within named John Barker in his life time, agreeable to the intent and meaning of the obligation signed by the within named Cuffie which is hereunto annexed. Witness my hand and seal, this 8th day of July 1805.

At a court held for Chesterfield county the 8th day of July 1805 this deed and the memo indorsed were acknowledged by Benjamin Branch party thereto and ordered to be recorded.
