Text of Freedom Document
This deed made the 18th day of Oct 1851 between Michael McElwee of the one part & Charles White a slave belonging to the said Michael McElwee of the other part witnesseth that the said Michael McElwee for and in consideration of the good deportment and faithful service of the said Charles White as the slave of the said Michael McElwee and for the further consideration of the sum of five dollars by the said Charles White paid to the said Michael McElwee the rec’t whereof is hereby acknowledged doth emancipate manumit & forever set free from the service of him the said Michael McElwee his heirs & assigns the said slave Charles White above mentioned and the said Michael McElwee warrants generally the right of the said Charles White to his freedom by virtue of this deed. Witness the following signature & seal.
