Know all men by these presents that I Hamilton Brown of Wilkesboro North Carolina have manumitted, emancipated and set free and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free my negro man slave named Charles sometimes called Charles White now residing in the County of Bath and State of Virginia who was left to me by the late Doctor John McDowell of the Hot Springs in said County of Bath; and I do hereby declare him the said Charles to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him; he the said Charles hereby emancipated is a dark complexion about five feet ten inches high, and about forty five years of age. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 17th day of April 1846.

Martin Clerk of the Court of pleas and quarter sessions do certify that Hamilton Brown appeared in open court now sitting for the County of Wilks in the State aforesaid and acknowledged the foregoing signature to the written instrument to be his act & deed. Given under my hand & seal of office at Wilkesboro this 4th day of August 1846.

I do hereby certify that W. Martin whose name is attached to the above certificate is the acting Clerk, all his official acts as such is entitled to due faith and credit he being duly commissioned and sworn in as such. Given under my hand and seal this 4th day of August 1846.

This deed of emancipation from Hamilton Brown to Charles White was presented to me in my office and the acknowledgement being certified was admitted to record.
