Know all men by these presents that I Joseph Mayse of the County of Bath and Commonwealth of Virginia for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving hath liberated, emancipated and forever set free from servitude, and by these presents hath liberated, emancipated and forever set free from servitude my negro woman slave Charlotte and her future increase and doth hereby bind myself and my heirs to forever quit claim to the said slave Charlotte, and her future increase as a slave or slaves reserving to myself the services and control of my said slave Charlotte during my life. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this [blank] day of [blank] 1839.

This deed of emancipation from Joseph Mayse to Charlotte a slave was presented in to me in my office and on the 28th day of April 1840 was partly proved by the oath of Warwick Gatewood and Samuel Lewis and on the 29th day of May 1840 was fully proved by the oath of Robert Carlyle they being three of the subscribing witnesses thereto and was admitted to record.
