Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Brown of the County of Bath in the State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated and set free and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man slave named Lewis and sometimes called Lewis Brown, and I hereby declare him the said Lewis to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him. He the said Lewis sometimes called Lewis Brown hereby emancipated is a man of dark complexion about five feet ten or eleven inches high and will be twenty two years old about the first of January recent. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 25th day of September 1839.
