To all whom it may concern know ye that I William Edmiston of the County of Bath and State of Virginia being in possession of one negro man slave now about twenty one years of age named Jesse Grant son of Nathan and Peggy Grant and feeling it my indispensable duty to liberate him as I fully expect to stand with him in judgment before that God that will not do inequity where he that has done wrong shall receive for the wrong and every man according to his works whether they be good or whether they be evil for these and several other good causes and considerations. I have determined to emancipate said negro man and by these presents do emancipate him and declare him free and no longer a slave from and after the [illegible] day of [blank] in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty and I hereby further declare that from an dafter the expiration of said time, neither myself nor any other person or persons shall compel him to stay or labor longer than said negro man should of his own free will and record please so to stay and labor but that said negro man shall in all things enjoy all the liberty allowed to free black men by the laws of the state and lest any might attempt to enslave him contrary to the [illegible] of this bill, I bind myself my heirs executors or administrators firmly by these presents in the sum of one thousand dollars to be recovered of any person so offending before any court of record in this commonwealth. Given under my hand and seal this day of April in the year of our lord eighteen hundred and six.
