This indenture made the ninth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight by George Massingbird of the County of Bath and State of Virginia. Witnesseth that the said George Massingbird agreeably to the Act of Assembly in this case made and provided divers good considerations moving him thereunto, hath this day emancipated and forever set free from his service a mulatto man named Lewis aged about twenty years formerly a slave of the said Massingbird which mulatto man named Lewis he the said George Massingbird does hereby declare to be fully emancipated & set free from him, his heirs, &c so far as the said Act of Assembly do the same from the date of these presents. In witness whereof the said George Massingbird hath hereunto set his hand affixed his seal the day & date aforesaid.
