Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Mary Maddox of the County of Rappahannock and State of Virginia for divers good causes have this day emancipated and forever set free and by these presents do manumit, and forever restore to perfect freedom, free from the control, claim or demand of any and all person or persons whatsoever, the following slaves Benjamin aged fifty three, Jamie age thirty seven, Kitty aged twenty seven, Eliza Jane aged five years, Mary aged four years, Arthur aged two years, and George aged two months. The said slaves being the same that was bequeathed to me by my deceased husband Samuel Maddox dec’d by his last will and testament, and by virtue of the right vested in me by the said last will and testament of my said husband. I do hereby emancipate the salves aforesaid to perfect freedom from the control claim or demand of myself and of all and every other person or persons whatsoever. In testimony whereof I Mary Maddox have hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th of February 1843.

This deed of emancipation from Mary Maddox to slaves Benjamin &c was proved in open court by the oaths of the subscribing witnesses, and ordered to be recorded.
