Text of Freedom Document
Whereas I, Reuben E. Finnell, did by Bill of Sale bearing date on the [blank] date of [blank] sell to Gabriel Holland a free man of colour a certain negro woman named Mahala and her child Mary for a term of years at the expiration of which term the said woman Mahala and child Mary were by the terms of said Bill of Sale to be free, and whereas the said negro woman Mahala has since the said sale had born of her body a mulatto boy named John Robertson and that the said Gebriel Holland is desirous to emancipate forthwith the said woman Mahala and her two children, Mary and John aforesaid, and whereas it is deemed necessary and proper in order to remove any doubt or doubts that may hereafter arise concerning the power and authority for the said Gabriel Holland, thus to emancipate the said Mahala and her two children Mary and John Robertson, that I should consent to, and ratify the same, in order to do which is the object of these presents; therefore, know all men by these presents that I, Reuben E. Finnell, of the County of Warren and State of Va. do hereby emancipate and set free forever the said negro woman Mahala and her two children Mary and John, hereby giving to them and each of them their natural liberty, free from the control, claim or demand of me and my heirs hereby emancipating and freeing the said woman Mahala and her two children Mary and John, as much so, and as perfectly as is in my power to do. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of July 1839.
