Text of Freedom Document
Whereas I Gabriel Holland, a free man of colour, of the County of Rappahannock and State of Virginia, did purchase my wife Milly Holland, a mulatto woman, slave of the estate of Sarah Finnel, as will appear from a Bill of Sale, executed to me by Samuel Hopewell Commissioner and bearing date on the 18 day of May 1825; and whereas the said woman Milly Holland (my wife) has had two children since the said purchase, to wit, one son named Alexander aged ten years, and one daughter named Mary Ann, aged eight years; and whereas the woman Milly and her two children, Alexander and Mary Ann, above named by the Laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia would be slaves for life, unless emancipated by me in order to do which is the object of these presents. Therefore, I the said Gabriel Holland for divers causes and considerations, do hereby, by these presents, emancipate and set free forever my said wife, Milly Holland and two children, Alexander and Mary Ann, aged as aforesaid hereby giving to them and each one of them their natural liberty forever, free from the claim, control or demand of any and all person or persons whatsoever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of May 1839.
