Text of Freedom Document

This deed made the 9th day of March 1857 between Edward Walker of Carroll County Virginia of the one part and Charles his slave sometimes called Charles Walker of the County of Wythe State of Virginia. Witnesseth that in consideration of the faithful and honest conduct of said Charles and for the further sum of thirty dollars paid in hand, the said Edward Walker has emancipated and hereby emancipated and sets free the said Charles a man about seventy years of age of dark complexion, and the said Walker covenants that after this deed is duly acknowledged and recorded, the said Charles shall be a free man with all the rights guaranteed to persons of color in Virginia. Witness the following signature and seal.

Carroll County to wit
I John Wilkinson a Justice of the Peace in the county aforesaid State of Virginia certify that Edward Walker party to the above writing bearing date the 9th March 1857 has acknowledged the same before me in my said county. Given under my hand this 18th day of March 1857.

Virginia: In the Clerk’s office of Wythe County court 20th of April 1857.
This deed of emancipation from Edward Walker to Charles alias Charles Walker dated the 9th March 1857 was presented in said office the 20th April 1857 and with the certificate of acknowledgement annexed admitted to record.
