Know all men by these presents that I Robert Raper of the County of Wythe and State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated and set free and by these presents and manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man slave named Robert and generally called Robert Smith who was some time ago sold and delivered to me by John Sanders of said county and State and I hereby declare him the said Robert or Robert Smith to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him. He the said Robert hereby emancipated is a man of yellow complexion about five feet five inches high is about thirty years old and lame in the left ankle, the same having been thrown out of place. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this twelfth day of March in the year of Christ eighteen hundred and thirty four.

Virginia: at a court continued and held for & by the county at the Courthouse on Wednesday the 12th day of March 1836. This deed of emancipation was acknowledged by Robert Raper as his act and deed and ordered to be recorded.
