Text of Freedom Document
I Susannah King of Smyth County Virginia do hereby make my last will and testament, in the manner and form following, that is to say: First, I desire that all the perishable part of my estate be immediately sold after my decease, and out of the monies arising therefrom all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid. Secondly, I give unto my negro woman, Amy, my negro boy Henry and my negro girls Jane, Cosby Ann, Rachel Thompson and Elizabeth Campbell their freedom and liberty forever, and all their increase from this date. Thirdly, after payment of my debts and funeral expenses, I give equally to my six above named negroes the remainder of the proceeds of the sale of all of my perishable property. And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my friends James J. Roberts & John Miller executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other former will and testaments by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 2nd day of November in the year of our Lord 1841.

Whereas, I, Susannah King of Tazewell have made and duly executed my last will and testament in writing, the date of which cannot now be given from the fact that the said will is in the hands of Richard Roberts of the County of Smyth. And whereas by my said will I have emancipated all my slaves, which I then possessed and whereas two children have since been born of my slave Cosby, and fearing that the said will and testament will not emancipate these children, named Ellen and Louisa, now I do hereby declare this present writing to be a codicil to my said will and direct the same to be annexed thereto and taken as part thereof. And I do hereby will and bequeath that the said children Ellen and Louisa shall be free and emancipated and share an equal portion of my property with my other slaves. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17 day of September 1848.
