Be it known to all whom these presents may concern that according to an act of the General Assembly authorizing the emancipation of slaves I George Harman of Giles County from said authority (& believing freedom is the natural right of mankind) do hereby emancipate & set free my mulatto man, a slave called & known by the name of Thomas Bell about 28 years of & do relinquish all my right, title & interest to him, his person or property, if he may acquire any forever free from me, my heirs, Executors, or administrators or assigns in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hands and seal this 16th day of September in the year of our Lord 1829.

Virginia: In the Clerk’s office of Tazewell County Court September 16th 1829. This day George Harman came before me Ja’s F. Pendelton Deputy Clerk of the Court aforesaid (in my office) and acknowledged the written indenture of emancipation to be his act and deed and desired it should be recorded.

Pendleton Deputy for John Crockett Clerk of the County Court of Tazewell & do hereby certify that the written is a true copy of a deed of emancipation from George Harman to Thomas Bell a man of color belonging to said George Harman has been duly acknowledged and admitted to record in the clerk’s office of said county court.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my private seal there being no seal of office this 16th day of September 1829, in the 54th year of this Commonwealth of Virginia.
