Whereas I John Skidmore being the owner of a negro man slave name Swan aged about fifty seven years or thereabouts & also of the said Swan’s wife named Sally Hamilton aged forty years or there abouts and being now for acts of extraordinary merit of the said Swan, willing & desirous that the said Slaves Swan & Sally should from henceforth enjoy freedom as far-fourth as the Laws of Virginia will allow, do by these presents give and grant to the said Swan & Sally their freedom as aforesaid & to the future increase of the said Sally freedom also if any she may have, And hereby quit all manner of claim interest & title in & to the said Slaves Swan & Sally & the future increase of the said Sally forever in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 8th day of September in the year of our Lord 1820.
