Be it known to all to whom it may concern that I Evans Perry of Grundy County in the State of Virginia have this day emancipated & set free, and by these presents do emancipate and set free, in consideration of his faithful services to me and of his good,moral, general conduct and uniform obedience to my commands, my negro slave named Levi resident in the said county of Lee aged about 40 years. And I do by these presents declare that the said negro slave Levi is from this time hence forward forever a freeman of color and entitled to all the rights and immunities of a free man of color, so far as the laws of Virginia entitle him to such rights and immunities. Inwitness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 30thday of Octoberin the year of Christ 1841.TesteEvans Perry (seal)John D.
