Text of Freedom Document

In the name of God Amen. I John Noe of Lee County and State of Virginia being very weak in body but of sound mind and memory for which I thank Almighty God, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit.Principally and first of all I recommend my soul to god that gave it nothing doubling but that I shall receive the same again at the general resurrection and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like decent manner at the discretion of my friends. Secondly, I give to my sons John Noe, Regullus Noe, David Noe, Randolph Noe, James Noe, Charles Noe and Hiram Noe and my daughters Polly Osborn and Peggy Hubbard one dollar to be equally divided between them and no more.Thirdly I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Elizabeth Noe my negro Phill my bay horse and one cow and calf and all my household furniture and farming utensils and every species of property which I now possess of whatever nature or kind it may be, all of which property (except the said negro Phill) by her freely to be possessed and enjoyed forever, and at her death it is my will that the said negro Phill be at liberty to do for himself and as the laws of this state he cannot be set free I hope some of my friends will at the death of my said wife take the said negro Phill into their care and act as guardian for him, and I do hereby utterly revoke and disallow all former wills and testaments by me heretofore made hereby ratifying confirming and allowing this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this second day of December 1813. Signed, sealed, published and declaredJohn Noe (seal)by the said John Noe to be his last will and testament in presence ofCharles CarlenNancy BlakemoreWilliam HamptonJohn Noes will recorded Re C 1-53
