Know all men by these presents that I Lewis Neal of the County of Giles and State of Virginia for certain good reasons moving me emancipate manumit & forever set free my negro man slave Simon about thirty five years of age, and by these presents manumit emancipate & forever set free the said boy Simon, conferring upon him all the privileges intended for free persons of color within the Commonwealth of Virginia, hereby disclaiming any and all right on my part to exercise any act of control or management over the said boy Simon.In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 27thday of August 1844.Lewis Neal (seal)Virginia: In the Clerk’s Office of the County Court of Giles August the 27th1844This deed of emancipation from Lewis Neal to Simon late a slave of the said Neal was acknowledged before the undersigned and admitted to record.Teste, R.A.
