I Catharine B Leftwich of the County of Franklin in the State of Virginia considering the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, feeling it to be my duty to be ready whenever my summons come and being as I suppose of a sound and disposing mind domake and ordain this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time made. I direct all my just debts paid if I have any. 2ndMy nephew Tho’s B Greer can have the land I now live on at one thousand dollars payable in one two & three years or if he rather he can take it at valuation of cash price and then be indulged with the same aforesaid payments in one two and three payments.3 My other tract of land on Blackwater I wish to be sold and the money arising from the sale for the benefit of my black people.4 I want my black people to be free at my death Lewis, Alex, Lenny, Kizer, Milly with all of her increase if they choose, but if they had rather stay here then on that case they can choose a master or masters in any of my father’s family his children or grand children and then have the privilege of freedom every seven years as long as they live or choose a new master or masters in the aforesaid family of my father Moses Greer dec’d. his children or grand children or great grandchildren and have ten dollars a piece but if they rather go to some free state or territory then they must be fixed for the trek and money furnished for them to carry where they may go and make preparations to live comfortably. 5 I wish my nephew Moses G Carper to value the rest of my property with the assistance of my nephew in the county and then distribution be made to all alike of the little might after be and those are paid that attends to my estate, old Milly may choose her master or masters and theyhave fifty dollars for taking her. I appoint my nephew Moses G Carper Executor of this my last will in testimony whereof I have set my hand and seal and subscribed my name this 25thday of May in the year eighteen hundred and fiftytwo, signed sealed published by the testatrix Catharine B Leftwich as and for her last will and testament in the presence of us in her presence and at her request hereunto signed our names as witnesses to.Catharine B LeftwichAt a Circuit Court held for Franklin County at the Courthouse on the 17thday of May 1854This last will and testament of Catharine B Leftwich was produced in court and ordered o be recorded in this court, and Moses G Carper the Executor named in said will refusing to take upon himself the Execution thereof. On the motion of Chattan T Pocland who together with John A Smith, Moses G Booth and Moses C Greer as his securities executed bond in the penalty of $12000 conditioned according to law, and who took the oath prescribed by law certificate is
