Whereas in November 1854 Jimmy a negro man formerly a slave of Thompson Atkins was purchased by Rob’t Gibbons at a public sale of the said Atkins property and was purchased of said Gibbons by us for the purpose of enabling him to purchase and pay for himself and with the understanding that upon the payment in full of the purchase money paid for him, being one thousand & two dollars and interest thereon, and he having paid us in full the amount aforesaid and its interest under said contract, we Wm G Atkins & Siymore G Atkins for the consideration aforesaid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do hereby emancipate and set free the said negro man slave James Atkins forever. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hand and affixed our seals this 4th day of September 1860.

Virginia Smyth County to wit:
I W T Thurman a Justice of the Peace in and for said county, do hereby certify that Wm G Atkins and Siymore Atkins whose names are signed to the writing above bearing date on the 4th September 1860 have acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid given under my hand this 4th day of September 1860.

The within article of emancipation from Wm G Atkins and Siymore G Atkins (a slave man of color) was presented in the office aforesaid the above date and with the certificate of acknowledgement annexed admitted to record.
