Know all men by these presents that I Willam McPhatridgeof the County of Smith and State of Virginia have manumitted emancipated and set free and by these presents do manumit emancipate and set free a negro woman slave Betty and hereby declare her the said Betty to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of any free person with which it is in my power to vest her she the said Betty hereby emancipated aged about 60 years, about five feet high right black. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand & seal this 17thday August 1847.William McPhatridge (seal)Virginia at a Court begun & held for Smith County this 17thday of August 1847The above deed of emancipation from William McPhatridge to his slave Betty was acknowledged in Court by said McPhatridge as his act and deed and ordered to be certified & recorded.Teste, James F.
