Know all men by these presents that I John H. Vermillion of the County of Smyth and State of Virginia, have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro woman slave named Charlotte (sometimes called Charlotte Pate) and I hereby declare her the said Charlotte to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is my power to vests her. She the said Charlotte hereby emancipated is a woman of dark complexion, about five feet high and about forty seven years of age, and formerly belonged to William B. Charlton. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 13th day of May one thousand eight hundred and forty eight.
