Know all men by these presents that I John Calloway of Henry County and State of Virginia from motives of benevolence have manumitted and set free from slavery and do hereby manumit and set free from slavery the following slaves viz. Major (a man), sixty four years old, Squire (man), fifty nine years old, his wife Rose aged fifty two, Robin 41 years old & 8 children viz. William 19, Jordan 16, Robin jr 14, Madison 12, Alexander 10, Susan 7, Nancy 6, Emily 5. Also woman Nancy 44 years old and her three children viz. Peggy 20, Calder 16, Paulina 8 in all sixteen slaves. And I do hereby give grant and release unto the said slaves above named and their children and future increase all my right, title and claim of in and to their person labor and services and to the persons, labor and services of their children or increase as aforesaid and of in and to all the estate and property which they may hereafter acquire or obtain. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 1st day of April in the year of Christ one thousand eight hundred and fifty two.

This day John Calloway of said County personally appeared before me a justice of the peace for county aforesaid and qualified and acknowledged his true and lawful ownership of the slaves within described, and furthermore the contents of the within deed manumitted the said slaves to be his act and deed. And in testimony whereof I have set my hand and seal this 1st day of April in the year of Christ one thousand eight hundred and fifty two.

I Jeremiah Griggs Clerk of the County Court for the county and state aforesaid do hereby certify that Elkanah B Turner whose genuine signature appears to the foregoing certificate is, and was at the time of signing the same a justice of the peace in and for said county duly commissioned and qualified and that full faith and credit are due and ought to be given to all his official acts as such. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the seal of the said court at Martinsville this 2nd day of April 1852 in the 76th year of the Commonwealth.

I Jeremiah Griggs Clerk of the County Court for the County and State aforesaid do hereby certify that the foregoing deed of emancipation executed by John Calloway bearing date on the 1st day of April 1852 was with the certificates thereto annexed this day admitted to court in the clerk’s office of said court pursuant to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and annexed the seal of the said county court of Henry at Martinsville this 2nd day of April 1852 in the 76th year of the Commonwealth.
