Whereas by a deed of trust executed by William H. Chappell Archibald Vaughan and William G. Venable bearing date on the 16th day of August in the year 1849, a certain mulatto salve named Henry Chappell was conveyed by the said William H. Now therefore this deed witnesseth: that in consideration of the premises, the said Archibald Vaughan, of the County of Prince Edward and State of Virginia, and William G. Venable formerly of the same county & state, but now of Texas, do hereby emancipate, liberate, set free and discharge from service and slavery Henry Chappell a mulatto aged about forty one or forty two years in height about five feet five inches and a fraction, with a small scar on the left of his mouth.
