Whereas Alexander Pattison late of the county of Prince Edward dec’d did by his last will and testament of record in the clerk’s office of the said county among other things provide as follows: “My man Charles shall have his freedom at the end of any year he chooses”. And whereas the said Charles has elected to have his freedom at the end of this year, now therefore I Willis P. Bocock executor of the said last will and testament of the said Alexander Pattison dec’d have manumitted, emancipated and set free and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free the said negro man salve Charles, late the property of the said Alexander Pattison dec’d being the same slave referred to and mentioned in the above stated clause of the said last will & testament of the said Alexander Pattison dec’d, and I hereby declare him the said Charles to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him, the said Charles, hereby emancipated is a man of light complexion, about five feet 9 or 10 inches high & about forty two years old. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal, this 31st day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred & thirty six.

At a court held for Prince Edward County August the 22nd 1837.
This deed of emancipation was presented in court and acknowledged by Willis P. Bocock party thereto, to be his act and deed, ordered that the same be recorded and certified.
