To all whom it may concern know ye that by an Act of Assembly passed in Virginia May 1782 intitled an act for the emancipation of slaves therefore all persons who are disposed so to do are thereby empowered therefore by the authority aforesaid I Zadock B Thackston of Prince Edward County from a clear conviction of the impropriety of slavery do set free the following slave, Ben who is now twelve years old shall go out free in the year eighteen hundred and sixteen entirely free from me or mine or any other person whatsoever under the power of civil protection as witness my hand and seal this 11th day of June 1798.

This deed of emancipation from Zadock B Thackston to his negro slave Ben was presented in court and acknowledged by said Thackston party thereto to be his act and deed ordered that the same be recorded.
