Text of Freedom Document
This indenture made and entered into this 5th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five. Witnesseth that I John Nash of Prince Edward County & State of Virginia for various considerations of more especially for the sum of forty two pounds Virginia currency paid to me by the Rev. John Blair Smith of the county of Philadelphia & State of Pennsylvania on account of John Jackson, a negro slave, have by these presents emancipated & set at liberty the said John Jackson & I do by this instrument declare him free from the contract, power or authority of myself, the said John Nash, my heirs executors, administrators or assigns under any presence whatever, freely and voluntarily relinquishing all claim to the said John Jackson as a slave or command over him for future services, having hereby vested in him full power, peaceably to enjoy his freedom as a citizen of the united States without any let or interruption from me the said John Nash my heirs Executors or administrators, or any of them to remain free and clearly acquitted exonerated & discharged, hence forward to the end of his life. It is however declared to be the intention of these presents that arguably to the Act of Assembly, empowering the owners of slaves to liberate them, under certain limitations, he the said John Jackson doth accede to the covenants entered into by the subscribed his late owner. In testimony whereof I the said John Nash have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year above written.
