Text of Freedom Document
I Jesse Johnson of Prince Edward being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that it is my duty to do unto others as I would be done unto in the like situation and having under my care two negroes of the following names and ages (viz): Sam thirty two and Beller thirty five years old. I hereby emancipate and set free the above named slaves and do for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators, relinquish all my right, title, interest and claim or pretentions of claim whatsoever, either to their persons or to any estate they may hereafter acquire. And having under my care two negroes of the following names and ages (viz) Isaac five and Maggy nine years old whom I do also emancipate and set free and do for myself my heirs Exors and Admrs relinquish all my right, title, interest and claim or pretentions of claim whatsoever either to their persons or to any estate they may acquire after they attain to the age of eighteen, and twenty one years, when they are to enjoy their freedom in as full and ample manner as if they had been born of free parents without any interruption from me, or any person claiming for, by, from or under me. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal 16th day December 1782.

At a court held for Prince Edward County April 21st 1783. This instrument of writing signed and sealed by Jesse Johnson emancipating and setting free four of his negro slaves was presented in court and acknowledged by said Johnson and on his motion is admitted to record.
