Know all men by these presents that by virtue of the direction of the last will and testament of Richard H. Bynum dec’d I hereby manumit and set free and emancipate a negro man slave named Phil and I hereby declare him the said Phil to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of free person with which it is in my power to vest him. He the said Phil hereby emancipated is a man of tolerable bright complexion, five feet four inches high in his [illegible] and is about thirty four years of age. He has a scar on his forehead, a mole on the right cheek, a scar on the knuckle of his middle finger (right hand) a scar on the right wrist & a scar on the left hand extending from the thumb to the wrist. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th day of April 1846.
