Text of Freedom Document

This deed made this 22nd March in the year 1854 between Robert McCandlish administrator with the will annexed of John Hockaday deceased, of the first part, and Charity Mercer, of the second part; Witnesseth, that the said Robert McCandlish administrator as aforesaid, for and in consideration of the provisions of the will of John Hockaday deceased, and of the decree of the circuit court of the City of Williamsburg and County of James City, made last July in suits pending in the said court, does by these presents, assent to the devise of freedom to the said Charity Mercer as set forth in said will, and he does by these presents release and discharge her from all service forever. In witness the hand and seal of the said administrator this day and year aforesaid.

Virginia. In James City County Court Clerk’s Office, March the 23rd 1854.
This day the foregoing deed of emancipation was acknowledged before me in the office aforesaid, by Robert McCandlish administrator with the will annexed of John Hockaday deceased, a party thereto, to be his act and deed, and thereupon the same was admitted to record.
