Text of Freedom Document
I Gerrard Ellyson of New Kent County from mature consideration and the conviction of my own mind being fully persuade that freedom is the natural right of all mankind I do therefore declare that having under my care sundry negroes to wit Benjamin aged twenty five years, Peter aged twenty three years, Simon aged twenty one years, Harry aged twenty years, Ned aged eighteen years, Neptune aged sixteen years, Tom aged fourteen years, I do therefore for myself, my heirs, Executors, administrators hereby release unto them the said negroes all my right interest and claim or pretentions of claim whatsoever unto their persons or to my estate they may acquire after they shall attain to the age of twenty one years without any interruption from me or any person claiming for by from or under me. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of the tenth month one thousand seven hundred and ninety two.

At a court held for New Kenty County the 11th day of October 1792. This deed of emancipation was brought into court by Gerrard Ellyson party thereto and ordered to be recorded.

Anne Ellyson in her note to the Clerk of New Kent calls the within Neptune (Neptune Peters) and from sundry other notes he shews he is called Neptune Peters. Given under my hand this 12th day of Jany 1809.

At a court held for Wythe County on the 11th day of September 1811. This deed of emancipation was presented in court by Neptune one of the persons herein named and on his motion it is recorded that the same with the certificate recorded be recorded in the court.
