Text of Freedom Document
In the name of God Amen. I Agnes Peatross of the City of Caroline, State of Va. being of sound and deposing mind, but in bad health, do make and ordain this my last will and testament (thereby revoking all other wills and testament heretofore made) in manner and form following viz.
1st I give and bequeath to my brother William C. Peatross the whole of my estate both real and personal to him and his heirs forever, except my negroes.
2nd I give to my said brother William C. Peatross my negroes and their future increase during his life time and after his death, if he provided the means for defraying the expenses of their removal to someone of the free states or to some colony in Africa, they are to be immediately emancipated and removed, and if he does not provide the means to defray the expenses of their transportation, they are to be hired out until a sufficient amount of money be raised to defray the expenses of their removal, and then they are to be emancipated and removed as above directed.
Lastly, I appoint my said brother William C. Peatross sole executor to this my last will and testament and request that the court may not require him to give security for his executorship.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my name and affix my seal the fourteenth day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty three,

At a court of monthly sessions held for Caroline County at the courthouse on Monday the 8th day of Sepr 1856.
The last will and testament of Agness Peatross dec’d was proved by the oath of M.F. Wortham late Peatross and S.E. Mason late S.E. Peatross two of the witnesses thereto, and is ordered to be recorded. On motion of Wm C Peatross the exor. Therein named he having taken the oath of an exor. entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $6000 condition according to law certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of said will in due form, no security taken the testatrix by her will requested that none should be regarded.
