This indenture made and entered into this (9th) ninth day of March in the year 1853 between George Tompkins of the County of Caroline and John Johnson a slave named by the said Tompkins – witnesseth that the said Geo Tompkins for & in consideration of the fidelity, good character and good conduct of the said John Johnson doth emancipate the said John Johnson and confer upon him all the rights & privileges of a free man according to and as far is permitted by the laws of the state and doth convey, release, transfer, assign and confirm unto the said John Johnson all the right, title, interest, claim and demand which he may have or might apart to any property real, personal, or mixed now in the use & possession of or acquired by the said John Johnson he having also paid me one hundred dollars as the consideration of this deed. Witness the following signature and seal.

I John B Kean a justice for the county aforesaid in the State of Virginia do certify that George Tompkins whose name is signed to the writing above bearing date on the ninth day of March 1853 has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid – Given under my hand this 14th day of March 1853.

In Clerk’s Office of Caroline County Court June 13th 1853
The foregoing deed Chas this day received in my office and together with a certificate of its acknowledgement before a magistrate therein endorsed was admitted to record.
