Text of Freedom Document

Dear Green June 9th 1836
Confiding implicitly in your honor as a man it is needless to call on your affection as a brother to carry in effect my ultimate wishes. My course of life forced on me from circumstances I do not with to estimate, but so long as I live it is my wish to act honorable to the world and to carry with me to the grave a conscience devoid of crime in its own conviction however it may be judged of by others. First. I wish you to provide for the children Virginia and Ann, I wish them to have five hundred dollars each and to divide equally Joanna and her increase. Chenan and her children should she have any must have their freedom. Should she prefer living here give her a hundred acres of land, and the whole of my medical accounts and if you do not give her this place, build a comfortable house for her. The balance of my estate is yours and your heirs. Should Chenan prefer moving to Ohio give her an equivalent to what is mentioned above. Green to you I have entrusted duties more dear to me than existence, I feel that I shall not be deceived. God only knows when my life may be ended and I may not have the time to do that which is here allotted to you but come when death may this sketch imperfect as it is will plainly inform you of any intention. Fulfill to the uttermost my brother, what I here request and may God bless you and yours.
Mr. Green Hill Richard Hill

At a court held for Dinwiddie County on the 15th day of January 1844.
This writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Richard Hill dec’d was presented in court by Green Hill, and there being no subscribing witness thereto, Isham E Hargrave & Hartwell H. Lewis were sworn and severally deposed that they are well acquainted with the testator’s hand writing, and verily believe the said writing and the name thereto subscribed and the superscription thereon endorsed to be wholly written by the testator. Whereupon, it is ordered that the said writing be recorded as the true last will and testament of the said Richard Hill dec’d. And on the motion of Green Hill, who took oath prescribed by law, and together with Isham E. Hargrave George W. Rose and David F. Hoy his securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of thirty thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of Richard Hill dec’d with his will annexed in due form.
Teste,
Jn P. Crump CC
