In the name of God Amen. I Richard Hawks of the County of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, being sick, old and infirm, but of sound mind and disposing memory, do make and ordain this (hereby revoking all others) as my last will and testament in manner and form following, to wit:
1st It is my will and desire that my slaves hereinafter named be emancipated and set free from slavery, according to the laws of Virginia: namely my negro woman Patty and her children, to wit: Milly, Nancy, Rachel, Martha, Booker, Gilliam, and William, and also the grand children of the said Patty, to wit: Sam & Jack the children of said Milly; Elizabeth Jane, the child of said Nancy, Richard Lafayette & Solomon Greenhill children of said Rachel and Ann Eliza, the child of said Martha, with all and every of their future increase.
2ndly I desire my Executors herein after named to sell the whole of my estate, real, personal and ruined of every description and kind whatsoever, to the highest bidder for cash or such credit, as they in their discretion may think and advisable (including all my slaves not herein before emancipated) and out of the proceeds, after the payment of all just debts and funeral expenses, they make division in the following manner: to wit: a half share to the aforesaid emancipated Patty, a share and a half each to Milly, Nancy, Rachel, and Martha, a share each to Broker, Gilliam, and William, so that Patty is to have half as much as her said sons and her said daughters, half again as much as their brothers.
3rdly The rest and residue of my estate I wish divided in the manner and in the same portions as mentioned in the clause last aforesaid.
4thly I nominate and appoint my friends Thomas Hobbs and William B Wilson my whole and sole Executors to this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of February 1836.

At a court held for Dinwiddie County in the 18th day of June 1838
This last will & testament of Richard Hawks dec’d was proved by the oaths of Edward L. Pegram, Philip Jones & JW Williamson subscribing witnesses & ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Thomas Hobbs & William B. Wilson Executors therein named, who made oath thereto, and together with William H. Cousins, Lanna W Hobbs & Charles H Wilson their securities entered into & acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $25000 conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
