Whereas the within named Kitty was purchased more than five years ago by my wife with the clear understanding between them to that when said Kitty had repaid the price she sold for, either by payment of money or under of personal services she and her child should be entitled to their freedom. And whereas said Kitty has faithfully performed her promises & undertakings & good faith requires that those of my wife should be equally performed, although the law does not recognize her her contracts, she not having estate independent of mine. Know then all men by these presents that I Job Turner of the Town of Staunton & State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated & set free a negro woman slave named Kitty & her male child named Peter, both of whom are owned exclusively by me & are now in my possession & I hereby declare her the said Kitty & her said son Peter to be entirely liberated from slavery & entitled to all the rights & privileges of free persons with which it is in my power to invest them. The said Kitty is a woman of dark brown complexion about five feet high & her son is about five years old & of like color with his mother.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 24th day of June in the year 1861.

In the clerk’s office of the Court of Hustings for the Town of Staunton. June 24th 1861.
This deed of emancipation from Job Turner to Kitty and her son Peter was this day presented in the office aforesaid, and being duly acknowledged by the said Turner before me, Clerk of said Court, is admitted to record.
