Text of Freedom Document
This deed of emancipation made the ninth day of January in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight, witnesseth that I, Nancy N. Clarke of the Town of Staunton in the State of Virginia, for and in consideration of the past services and good character of my servant man named Nicholas Johnson, a slave, (aged sixty five years on the 4thday of November last) as well as for other good and sufficient considerations me thereunto moving, have emancipated and set a liberty, and do by these presents forever manumit and free my said slave Nicholas Johnson, and from this time forth he is to be bound to no more service to me, or any person whomsoever claiming under me, but is in all respects to be entitled to all and singular the rights and privileges of a free man. And I hereby covenant that I will warrant the freedom of the said Nicholas Johnson against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons, whosoever, claiming under, through or by me. Witness my signature and hand.

I, John Wayt, a Notary Public for the County of Augusta in the State of Virginia, do certify that Nancy N. Clarke whose name is signed to the writing above, bearing date on the 9th day of January 1858, has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid. Given under my hand this 13th day of January 1858.

This deed of emancipation from Nancy N. Clarke to Nicholas Johnson was this day presented in the office aforesaid and being duly acknowledged before J. Wayt, a Notary Public for Augusta County, is with this certificate annexed, admitted to record.

This acknowledgment of this deed being duly reported to court and ordered to be entered on the minutes.
