Be it remembered that whereas I Ann Burgess of the Corporation of Staunton and Commonwealth of Virginia, for and in consideration of the fidelity, honesty and faithful services heretofore done, observed and rendered by my negro woman slave named Rose, who is now about thirty years of age, and of sound health and constitution, I the said Ann Burgess do hereby for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators, solemnly order and declare that from and after this date of these presents, the said negro woman slave named Rose shall be fully freed, emancipated and discharged from all further slavery, hereby for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators renouncing and relinquishing for ever, all further right, title, interest and property in, of or to the aforesaid slave Rose. And that she said Rose shall and may from this date of these presents, enjoy perfect freedom and emancipation, arguably to, and consistent with the Act of the General Assembly of Virginia in such case made and provided. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this eleventh day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five, and in the twenty ninth year of the Commonwealth.

At a court of Hustings held for the Corporation of Staunton, on Monday June the 17th 1805. This instrument of writing executed by Ann Burgess, emancipating her negro woman slave named Rose, was presented in court and proved by the oaths of Charles Todd and William Dunn two of the witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded.
