Be it remembered that whereas I Wright Burgess of the Borough of Staunton and Commonwealth of Virginia, having especial regard for the honesty and fidelity of my negro slave Jonas, who is above the age of twenty one years, and being conscious that all men by nature are entitled to liberty and freedom, however diversified their color or complexion may be; do by virtue of these presents, for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators, solemnly order and declare, that the said slave Jonas shall, from and after the day of the date of these presents, be fully and completely freed and discharged from all further slavery, and may and shall enjoy perfect freedom and emancipation, arguably to, and consistent with the Act of the General Assembly of Virginia, in that case made and provided. In witness whereof, I the said Wright Burgess have hereunto set my hand and seal, the twenty second day of February, one thousand eight hundred and six, and in the thirtieth year of Commonwealth.

At a court of Hustings held for the Corporation of Staunton, on Monday April the 21st 1806. This instrument of writing executed by Wright Burgess emancipating his negro man slave Jonas, was presented in court, and proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto and on the motion of the said Burgess, ordered to be recorded.
