This indenture made this third day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twelve, between Christopher Morris of the Borough of Staunton and State of Virginia of the one part, and George Rob of the same plan, witnesseth that whereas the said Christopher Morris, now at this time, holds and possesses a full, perfect and absolute right and property, of, in and to a certain negro boy slave, named Jerry, about fifteen years and six months of age; and whereas the said Christopher Morris, being desirous, through principles of humanity, in some increase to shorten and lighten the burden of slavery for life, which the said negro boy, by the laws of this Commonwealth is subject to, and in order the better to prepare and qualify him for the enjoyment of these benefits and privileges of emancipation and freedom hereafter intended for him by these indentures; and in the further consideration of sum of four hundred dollars, to him the said Christopher Morris in hand paid by the said George Rob, at or before the signing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof he the said Christopher Morris doth hereby acknowledge- he the said Christopher for and in consideration of the premises aforesaid, and also in consideration of the covenants and promises of the said George Rob, herein after mentioned, doth hereby bargain, sell, transfer and assign unto the said George Rob his heirs and assigns, the aforesaid negro boy Jerry, as and for his absolutely property, until the said boy Jerry shall arrive & attain to the age of thirty four years, during which time he the said Christopher Morris for himself & his heirs and assigns, against the claim of him the said Christopher Morris & his heirs, and against the claim or claims of all and every other person or persons whatsoever. And it is to be understood by and between the parties, and by all other persons and it is positively and absolutely declared by this instrument of writing that the aforesaid negro boy Jerry shall from and after the time he shall arrive and attain to the age of thirty four years, be fully emancipated, set free and discharged from slavery. And the said George Rob on his part, for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators, doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said Christopher Morris, his heirs, executors or administrators, that he the said George rob will use his best endeavors and due diligence to learn and interest the said boy, or cause him to be taught and learned, the trade, art or occupation of a wagon maker, which he the said George Rob now followeth; and further, that when the said boy Jerry, shall arrive to the age of thirty four years, he the said George Rob will pay unto him the aforesaid boy Jerry, the sum of one hundred dollars. And in testimony of the covenants herein contained, may be established, done and performed with faith, they the said Christopher Morris and George Rob, have hereunto set their hands and seals, the day and year first afore written.

At a court of Hustings held for the Corporation of Staunton, on Monday April the 20th 1812. This instrument of writing between Christopher Morris of the one part and George Rob of the other part, was proved in court by the oaths of Vinent Tapp and Jowitt Tapp two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
