This deed of emancipation made this 11th day of April one thousand eight hundred and sixty one between D.J. Claiborne sen’r of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the one part and his slave Fredrick Rivers of the other part, witnesseth that whereas Watkins Samford under the will of his brother William Samford dec’d has emancipated Lucy Ann the wife of the said Fredrick Rivers & her children, and they are shortly to be sent out of the state and the said D.J. Claiborne being unwilling to separate his aforesaid man Fredrick Rivers from his family and in consideration of his good conduct and faithful deportment as a servant, doth hereby emancipate the said Fredrick Rivers and set him free denouncing all claim to him whatever. Witness the following signature and seal.
