To all whom these presents shall come know ye that for divers good causes and considerations me hereto moving and especially in pursuance to the authority granted by an act of General Assembly passed last session instituted “an act to authorize the manumission of slaves”. I Joseph Crook of the County of Brunswick have manumitted emancipated and freed forever slavery and bondage the following slaves viz. Betty a negro woman about twenty seven years of age purchased by me of Starkey Robinson formerly of Dinwiddie County eighteen years ago, Kizzy aged eleven, Flora aged six and Jency aged one year, the said three last mentioned, slaves being the children of the aforesaid Betty and I do hereby for my self my heirs Executors and administrators acquit and discharge the above named persons from any claim that either I the said Joseph Crook or any of them may have for any service, engagement or contract whatsoever against the said Betty, Kizzy, Flora and Jency, or either of them. In witness whereof I the said Joseph Crook have hereto set my hand and seal this 28th day of October 1782.
